Welcome message from Niels Elers Koch, IUFRO President:
In June 2012, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) in association with the Forestry Research Network of Sub-Saharan Africa (FORNESSA) will celebrate its first Regional IUFRO-FORNESSA Congress together with ITTO-AFF Forest Policy Day in Africa. As President of IUFRO it makes me proud and confident that this important event will further stimulate and enhance the scientific cooperation with forest researchers and organizations in Africa.
Forests in Africa are of special importance because of their central role for people's wellbeing in this region. Quality research in forestry and related fields need to continue providing the scientific knowledge for the conservation and sustainable management of forest resources. I, therefore, will be very grateful to welcoming many scientists and officeholders from IUFRO at this first regional Congress in Nairobi, Kenya.
Welcome message from Dr. Victor Agyeman, Chairman of FORNESSA:
It gives me great pleasure and honor to welcome you to the first IUFRO and FORNESSA Regional Congress on “Forests and Trees: Serving the People of Africa and the World” in Nairobi, Kenya from 25-29 June 2012.
Forest resources in Africa are essential in people’s lives and fulfill important role in national and local economies and in environmental quality. FORNESSA’s goal is to support and strengthen forestry research in order to contribute to the conservation, sustainable management and utilization of forest resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. In line with this goal, the first IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress will offer scientists, researchers, forest managers and policy makers the opportunity to share information and discuss related regional problems, research needs and achievements that will contribute to the well-being of the people of Africa and the world.
As Chairman of FORNESSA, I sincerely hope that many scientists from Africa and interested researchers from IUFRO and other networks will participate and contribute actively in this important event. I eagerly look forward to receiving your scientific input and to welcoming you in Nairobi in June 2012.
