The Conference and Expo is an opportunity for stakeholders in the commercial forestry sector in Kenya and the region, to showcase and exhibit commercial forestry technologies and opportunities that investors can tap into. The forum will bring together professionals, researchers, wood processors, investors, and other key players in the sector to take stock of the status of the industry, challenges, and opportunities available. It will also provide a platform that will act as a springboard for the future development and financing of commercial forestry in the country and region.

IUFRO WORLD DAY - Digital Forest Science Forum 2021! It takes place online, in three time zones around the world with 24 hours of forest-related research topics, networking and emerging issues of relevancy for global policy makers. We thought you might be interested in this unique opportunity to meet, interact, share, and strengthen global research cooperation.

Within this event, IUFRO-SPDC is organizing three sessions (one in each time zone) to inform about what IUFRO-SPDC has to offer, what the benefits are for participants, and to collect input from the relevant regions on changing priorities, expanding skills, knowledge and capacities needed by forest scientists. Two sessions will be held in English and one in Spanish.

The title of the session is “Capacities for forest science: Shape your professional future” and will take place on the following dates:

Our planet is under increasing threats from ecological degradation, declining biodiversity, worsening desertification and frequent extreme weather events that pose severe challenges to human survival. Particularly, 1 billion people in over 100 developing countries are locked in the cycle of poverty and environmental degradation made worse by the effects of climate change. On the other hand, healthy ecosystems and their services provide opportunities for sustainable economic prosperity while at the same time providing defence against the negative effects of climate change.

Embracing the theme of Ecosystem Restoration, this virtual conference will bring together key experts in the fields of ecosystem restoration, conservation, and sustainable management from the Global South to share good practices and lessons learnt of ecosystem research and management, as well as to explore partnership opportunities to further collaborate on the topics of ecosystem restoration.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Portulans Institute, a research and educational institute based in Washington DC, invite you to join a virtual meeting on the state of Africa region’s progress in network readiness and digital transformation in a post COVID-19 world. The session will take place on November 30th from 12.30 pm (GMT+3) to 2.00 pm (GMT+3) and will be chaired by Ms. Vera Songwe, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa.

The Portulans Institute co-founders will present the 2020 Network Readiness Index (NRI) results, highlighting regional data found within the NRI 2020 Report, released on 19 October by the Portulans Institute. The report assesses how countries are ready to leverage information technologies to be future-ready and ranks a total of 134 economies based on their performance across 60 variables.

The panelists will reflect on the main findings of the report, speak on leveraging digital transformation in the post COVID-19 world, and facilitate discussions among policy makers and stakeholders. Please see the attached concept note, as well as the event flyer.

Simultaneous interpretation in French and English will be provided.
