IUFRO Management Committee meets CSIR-FORIG Research Scientists

The President of IUFRO, Dr. John A. Parrotta and the Director of CSIR-FORIG Plants a Tree to commemorate the Visit of the IUFRO Delegation to Ghana and CSIR-FORIG

CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana-Fumesua came alive on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023, as the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) management committee embarked on a significant working visit led by the esteemed President of the organization, Dr. John A. Parrotta. This visit was a testament to the thriving collaboration between global forest research leaders and Ghana's distinguished Institute CSIR-FORIG.
With a warm embrace, the Director of CSIR-FORIG, Prof. Daniel A. Ofori, welcomed the IUFRO delegation.
Prof. Ofori expressed delight at hosting their distinguished guests, emphasizing the enduring bond between the two institutions.
He took the opportunity to introduce CSIR-FORIG once more, showcasing its remarkable evolution and commitment to becoming a Centre of excellence in forestry research excellence in the humid tropics.
During the enlightening presentation, Prof. Ofori provided a glimpse into the institute's history and the diverse research divisions working tirelessly towards their respective goal. He indicated that each division focused on a specific research domain, all contributing to CSIR-FORIG's overarching mission and that the research programmes of the institute are in synchrony with the
IUFRO themes and Divisions.
Dr. Parrotta, the President of IUFRO, reciprocated with an overview of IUFRO's mission and operations highlighting the organization's commitment to being the global voice of forest science for a more sustainable future. This vision, he noted, is closely aligned with CSIR-FORIG's mission.
Dr. Parrotta explained that their mission thrived on research excellence and knowledge dissemination to find science-based solutions to global forest challenges, echoing the commendable work being done by CSIR-FORIG and expressed their intent to replicate this commitment in other countries.
In a moment of pride, Dr. Parrotta revealed that Ghana play a significant role within IUFRO, with Prof. Daniel A. Ofori representing the nation as the country's representative on the international council.
He also lauded the presence of five IUFRO member organizations in Ghana, with CSIR-FORIG leading the way.
As the meeting progressed, researchers shared heartwarming experiences with IUFRO, from sponsorship to conferences, underscoring the impactful partnerships fostered by the organizations.
Dr. Parrotta concluded by extending an open invitation for members to reach out for any needed information and expressed gratitude to the Director Prof. Ofori for his warm hospitality.
To commemorate the visit, he presented the Director of CSIR-FORIG with an iconic IUFRO cap and a symbolic mapping bird, while recognizing the outstanding contributions of select members with tokens of appreciation. To crown it all, the President who led the delegation planted an endangered species of Aubergrinia taiensis. “Great Tiger-nut tree” at the Rawlings Park of CSIR-FORIG.
This harmonious interaction between the IUFRO Management Committee and CSIR-FORIG was a testament to the power of international collaboration in advancing forest research for a sustainable future.

IUFRO’s Scientist Assistance Programme (SAP https://www.iufro.org/science/special/spdc/i-scientist-assistance-progr…) aims to provide forest scientists from economically disadvantaged countries with financial assistance to participate in the XXVI IUFRO World Congress 2024, taking place in Stockholm, Sweden from 23 to 29 June 2024. IUFRO Short Scientific Visits (SSV)

In 2023, IUFRO’s Special Programme for Development of Capacities will offer grants of up to €5,000 for Short Scientific Visits for early career scientists affiliated with IUFRO member organisations. These visits will provide a unique opportunity for young scientists from Africa, Asia and Latin America to visit a forest research organisation overseas and conduct international scientific collaboration.

IUFRO is conscious of the importance of connecting the young forest science community to address challenges facing forests and forestry. Broadly, we strive to provide these future leaders with international experience to better equip them to address future global challenges and identify, create and fully utilise emerging opportunities.

The desired outcome is to provide both the grantee and their affiliated organisation with the opportunity to build research collaboration and capacity and to provide opportunities extending beyond the initial scientific exchange. The goals for the grantee are broad and could include for example, skills development, establishing productive relationships with scientific peers in the host country, using the visit to benefit their own research and, if possible, publishing of scientific material.

HOW TO APPLY? - BY 31 JULY 2023

Potential applicants are required to contact the potential host organisation prior to applying for a grant. Together they shall develop and agree on essential elements for the short scientific visit grant application including a project proposal and work plan, timing and duration of the proposed visit, and a mentor in the host country.

Candidates interested in applying for a short scientific visit grant should complete the online application form and submit their complete application documents in one PDF including all required application documents (work plan, endorsement letter by host and applicant’s Head of Department, and CV of applicant and mentor) by 31 July 2023. The PDF document should be uploaded with a filename following the format “SSV_FirstnameLastnameCountry.pdf” to this link. Only complete applications will be considered.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The applicants will be selected on a competitive basis in accordance with the following criteria

Originality and relevance of the research topic
Applicant’s previous experience and work on the proposed research topic
Overall quality of the work plan
Feasibility of the work planned at the host institution
Geographic and gender balance
Applicants that have not previously been awarded a grant for a short scientific visit have preference.

FUNDING

The grant supporting the scientific visits will be a lump sum payment of up to €5,000 that will be paid once the grantee has acknowledged that the application has been successful and upon signing of the grant acceptance agreement.

The funding should cover travel and subsistence costs for the period of the grant.

HOST INSTITUTION

The applicant will be responsible for obtaining the agreement of the host institution before submitting the application. While the applicant needs to be affiliated with a member organisation of IUFRO, the host institution need not necessarily be a member institution. If you are interested in hosting an SSV, we encourage you to share this application with potential candidates.

Call for Chapter Proposals - REDD+ Governance in Africa: Practical design and implementation options

Forest degradation and deforestation are major causes of global environmental change. The
combined emissions from deforestation and degradation account for an estimated 20% of
global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest
Degradation (REDD+) is a global agreement on climate change mitigation through reduction
in GHG emissions and increases in GHG removals. REDD+ also seeks to provide socioecological
co-benefits (e.g. biodiversity protection, pro-poor development, human rights and
enhanced forest governance). African countries facing high levels of deforestation and forest
degradation (e.g. DR Congo, Ghana, Mozambique and Tanzania) are engaged in REDD+ to
address deforestation and pursue low carbon development paths. Therefore, these countries
are engaged in a number of multilateral and bilateral agreements on forest governance and
management. These engagements and development provide a foundation for the
implementation of REDD+ in Africa as these countries have put in place fairly innovative
institutional and policy frameworks for sustainable forest governance and management.

On the other hand, conventional and emerging challenges such as weak forest governance,
nebulous mechanisms for equitable benefit sharing, and ineffective enforcement of forest laws
and regulations are likely to affect the effective implementation of REDD+ across Africa. This
book thus seeks to document the practical experiences and lessons learnt in developing and
implementing REDD+ programmes in Africa. These experiences and lessons are critical to
guiding an effective development and implementation of REDD+ programmes in African
countries desiring to implement REDD+ programmes while providing a rich pool of
reference for countries in the preparation phase to draw on. The editors invite chapter
proposals (abstracts) offering both theoretical and practical contributions, with the aim of
advancing academic discourses and thinking, policymaking and implementation from
REDD+ negotiators, carbon market actors and sustainable finance experts, project
developers, scholars, researchers, and other leading experts.

The contributions should be on
but not limited to the following thematic areas with particular focus on Africa:
 REDD+ rationale and governance framework: theory and concept
- The nexus between deforestation, forest degradation, climate change and the
rationale for REDD+
- The Warsaw Framework and effective REDD+ governance
o Stakeholder participation: consultation and engagement, and gender
mainstreaming;
o Institutional and legal frameworks for REDD+ implementation
(institutional arrangements and coordination, tenure, carbon rights,
emission reduction rights, benefit sharing);
o Modalities for national forest monitoring systems; and measuring,
reporting and verification (MRV);
o Models and approaches for safeguards and information system; and
feedback and redress mechanism;
o REDD+ financing options (private sector, emission reduction and the role
of carbon markets);

 Experiences and lessons from selected REDD+ countries in Africa
- National case studies and localized experiences on:
o Stakeholder participation (participation in REDD+ decision-making;
practical approaches and tools to determining and effectively engaging
relevant stakeholders; and overcoming pitfalls to stakeholder
participation);
o Approaches and design of institutional and legal/policy frameworks for
REDD+ implementation;
o Benefit sharing mechanisms for REDD+;
o National forest emission monitoring system (challenges, practical
approaches and tools to designing effective forest emission monitoring
system);
o Safeguards and information system/feedback and redress mechanism
including human rights and gender mainstreaming in REDD+ design and
implementation;
o Transparency and accountability in REDD+ design and implementation;
and
o REDD+ finance beyond the pilot phases:
 Unlocking private sector finance for REDD+
 Emission reductions and the role of carbon markets
 Risk and risk management in private sector investment in REDD+

Chapter proposals of 200 words covering specific issues and research themes outlined above
including keywords (maximum 5 words), research methods/approach, and preliminary
findings; short author(s) bio (including affiliation and contact details) should be submitted to
Dr. Michael Addaney, michael.addaney@uenr.edu.gh and copy Mr. William Dumenu,
wdumenu@csir-forig.org.gh. Deadline for abstract submission is Friday, 15th October 2021.
Decisions on abstracts will be communicated by Friday, 29 October 2021. Full draft chapters
(5000-6000 words including reference list) of accepted abstracts are expected by Sunday, 30
January 2022. All accepted full chapters will be subjected to a two-stage single-blind peer
review process before final inclusion in the book.

NEW IUFRO-SPDC ONLINE TRAINING WORKSHOP ON SYSTEMATIC EVIDENCE EVALUATION ON FOREST LANDSCAPE RESTORATION.

We draw your attention to IUFRO's call for expressions of interest in the new IUFRO-SPDC online Training Workshop on Systematic Evidence Evaluation on Forest Landscape Restoration that is coming up on 22-26 March 2021.

The training workshop is organized by the IUFRO Special Programme for Development of Capacities (IUFRO-SPDC) in collaboration with the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. It is free of charge for participants, but the total number of participants is limited to 40.

Why develop research skills in systematic evidence evaluation?

The need for quantitative and qualitative scientific evidence for policy and management has significantly risen in recent years as the world is becoming increasingly interlinked with complex problems awaiting adequate policy and management decisions at all levels. This holds also true for the land use sector where forests and trees play key roles in the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of landscapes, particularly against the backdrop of the most pressing problems in the 21st century such as poverty, food security, transformation to a greener economy and sustainable development. In this context, it is important that sufficient evidence is generated from the body of globally available scientific research for the purpose of informing policy decisions and actions about forests and forest-related land-uses.

Who should participate?

Early and mid-career scientists from economically-disadvantaged countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America who are:

working on research issues related to forest landscape restoration,
interested in learning how to apply elements used in a systematic review to make their own work more robust and reliable, and
interested in meeting international peers in an open, collaborative environment with shared learning and peer-to-peer support.
