The 5 year programme ‘Future Climate for Africa’ (FCFA) will support research to better understand climate variability and change across sub-Saharan Africa. Its focus will be on advancing scientific knowledge, understanding and prediction of African climate variability and change, together with support for better integration of science into longer-term decision making, leading to improved climate risk management and the protection of lives and livelihoods.

In the second half of April 2014, DFID/NERC will launch a global open Announcement of Opportunity for world-leading multi-disciplinary research consortia to improve scientific understanding and prediction of extreme weather and climate change in sub-Saharan Africa and enhance the use of this information in real decisions. FCFA places the concept of Climate Services at its core and will specifically target sectors involved in longer-term decision making, such as infrastructure, water resources management, energy and urban planning. The partnership between DFID and NERC reflects the triple focus of the programme on scientific excellence, achieving impact and strengthening scientific capacity and international collaboration. The programme will take a co-production approach, providing information and services that are designed and tested with practitioners to inform real decisions. It will also place equal emphasis on extracting more value from existing climate information as generating new information and will draw on multiple disciplines to do this.
Further information is available at: http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/funded/programmes/fcfa/

sbritwum Tue, 04/15/2014 - 16:52

News source

Dr Helen Pearce, Science Programmes Officer, Natural Environment Research Council

Forests and Climate Change climate change / africa / DFID-NERC Tue, 15 Apr 2014 16:52:45 +0000 sbritwum 553 at https://www.fornis.net Prosopis beans - a new source of food in dryland Africa https://www.fornis.net/node/504 Prosopis beans - a new source of food in dryland Africa

Description

A Policy brief calling companies in the food and animal feed industries, government departments, aid agencies, and research and development organizations to take on board knowledge about this source of ‘free’ food that will improve rural livelihoods and food security in famine-prone dry areas.

Sheila Mbiru Fri, 02/22/2013 - 14:33

Responsible party

Kenya Forestry Research Institute and the Centre for Agroecology and Food Security, Coventry University,

Funding bodies

Kenya Forestry Research Institute and the Centre for Agroecology and Food Security, Coventry University,

Attachment

Size

 Prosopis beans policy brief.pdf

517.37 KB

Forest Products Utilisation and Trade Prosopis beans / Drylands / africa Fri, 22 Feb 2013 14:33:33 +0000 Sheila Mbiru 504 at https://www.fornis.net First IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress, "Forests and Trees: Serving the People of Africa and the World". 25–29 June 2012; Nairobi, Kenya. https://www.fornis.net/node/433 First IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress, "Forests and Trees: Serving the People of Africa and the World". 25–29 June 2012; Nairobi, Kenya.

The First IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress opened on Tuesday, 26 June 2012 at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. So too has the need for such information within the private forestry sector and among nongovernmental organizations, whose role in the development, sustainable management and conservation of forest resources in all regions of the world is steadily increasing in importance. Despite rapid advances in information technology that has, in theory, the potential to significantly improve the flow of research findings to policy-makers and forest managers, communication and interaction often is inadequate between the research community and the users of the information they generate.

Also, often research is planned and conducted before giving adequate thought to exactly how the results will be transformed into usable information. In order to generate value for society, research results should be used by someone – policy-makers, forestry practitioners, landowners, educators and other researchers.
